Becoming A Someone

A little over 5 months ago, I wrote a post a rant about the impact celebrities can have (you can read
that here).  If you don't want to take the time to read it; I'll give you a quick rundown of what it is all about.

As a lover of pop culture and celebrity gossip, I'm a huge fan of staying up-to-date with what all of my favorite celebrities are doing.  I honestly love learning about how these people get to where they are, but I also love watching to see how they handle the famous life.  It really astonishes me how big of an impact some of these people have.

For an example, let's look at Justin Bieber:

According to Twitter, he has almost 42 million followers
According to Facebook, his page has almost 56 million likes
According to Youtube, his Music Video for Baby has had almost 872 million views
He's won countless awards, ranging from American Music Awards to a CMT Award
He's sold millions upon millions of albums
And he's only 19 years old...

Guess what... I'm only 19 years old.  Justin basically has his own army that is willing to do anything and everything to please him or be noticed by him.  He can change everyones' views with a simple tweet.  Think of it this way: what if Justin Bieber suddenly decided to boycott rubber bands?  You can bet that there will be millions of people who stop using rubber bands.  Now think of it this way: what if Justin Bieber suddenly decided to give money to a helpful cause?  I'm not much of a gambler, but I bet the reaction from his fans won't disappoint.

So my question is why don't these celebrities use this power?  Why don't they change the world and impact their fans in positive ways everyday?  This is an issue I've been passionate about for a long time, and you can bet this won't be the last time I post about it.  These TEENAGERS hold more power in a simple tweet than I would if I suddenly decided to do the hokey-pokie in the middle of Times Square in my underwear.

As you can tell, I get pretty worked up about this kind of thing, and I'm going to move on with the conversation before I start pacing around my room with anxiety.  My main message is for celebrities to act.  Quit just doing ENOUGH.

After writing my past post, I started paying even more attention to how celebrities were using their fame.  Recently, it seems like a few celebrities have realized the impact that they can have and used it to their advantage.  Here are a couple of examples:

To be honest, I never really heard of John Mayer before he dated Katy Perry.  His music reminds me a little of one of my favorite artists Ron Pope, so I do enjoy and respect his work.  He recently went up on my list when I learned about this.  Apparently, John and Katy were visiting a music store in New York City when they ran into a couple of fans looking for pictures.  While conversing with them, John asked one of the girls which guitar was her favorite.  She then proceeded to point at the guitar she had been 'testing' and mention she could never afford it.  After John and Katy left the store, the manager approached the girl and told her that John had bought the guitar for her on his way out of the store.  How many of you would freak out if this happened to you?!  You can watch the girls' reactions right here.

Okay, so did he change the world with that simple purchase?  NO, but he did use his blessings to make someone else happy.  If I had a large sum of money sitting around, I'd use it to get people to smile too.

My other example is about, as you can see, One Direction.  Now, before you start harassing me about blogging about them too much; you need to listen to what two of the members are doing now with a charity called Trekstock.  Trekstock is a charity whose mission focuses on helping children with cancer.  They go about this mission by using music, fashion, and art in their fundraising efforts.  So, what does this have to do with One Direction?  Well, Liam Payne and Harry Styles are offering the ultimate trip to London for anyone who donates here.  Liam and Harry are flying the donator and a friend to London for three nights at a Central London Hotel.  They will then be given some spending money for a little shopping, before meeting the two band-boy-hunks for a nice night out.

A couple weeks ago I decided that I wanted to set aside some money each month for charity.  After seeing this, I knew where my money was going this month.  You've all heard me fangirl over London enough to know I had to enter.  However, the prize is beyond the point.  On the donation website, there is a continuously scrolling list of current donors.  Every second a new name and amount goes down the screen.  I can't wait until the campaign is over and see the final number!  The impact they're making is HUGE.  You may or may not like their music, but you have to agree that they're using their fame and status for an amazing mission.  I am and probably always will be a fan and supporter of these boys.

I wish I could continue giving you these amazing stories daily, but sadly; there's not enough becoming a reality.  Some of you may be thinking, "Well... I'm not famous so this post doesn't have anything to do with me."  On the contrary; it does.  I know I go on-and-on about celebrities making an impact, but us 'little people' can too.  Sure, we may only have 100 followers on Twitter or 1,000 page-views a month, but we can initiate change in our own way.  It'll probably be awhile before I make any huge leaps in my fight to impact the world, but I do know that the little things are just as important.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again:

Here's my message to you:

ALL OF YOU:

Celebrities, Bloggers, Family, Friends, and Strangers:

Take my words as a challenge.

Don't sit there and think,“Wow, this girl has a great way with words! I’m gonna add her on Twitter!”

Thanks, but NO!

Don’t add me on Twitter or support me if you aren't going to take my words to heart.

Your true test isn't if my words ‘hit you’ or 'made you think'.

Your test is your reaction.

    2. True that does help a lot, but then again I just realized how old I am and it makes sense that I know him and you don't since he isn't as popular as he was.

  3. Celebrities certainly don't use their 'power' enough I must say. There is so much more I feel some could be doing. However, you are right, we can all have an impact on people's lives, no matter how small the gesture :)
